Combine NAS and CD/DVD Servers to Manage Your Company's Data Storage Needs PrimeArray
today announced the NetServ line of direct network attached
servers that provides two essential services for any
IT organization, hosting CDs or DVDs and providing additional
network storage space for backups, archives, or other
data storage needs.
October 27, 2006—Chelmsford, MA—
IT Managers are continually faced with the need for
exponentially increasing amounts of data storage. It
is difficult to get old, unused data off production
servers. Thus, storage arrays directly attached to servers
are reaching capacity requiring expensive new servers.
IT Managers are also tasked with protecting data assets
and planning for speedy and thorough recovery in the
event of minor or catastrophic disasters. This generally
entails frequent onsite backups of all data along with
regular offsite backups.
Another issue facing numerous departments around the
organization is getting network-wide access to CD and
DVD-based content, such as MSDN or Technet subscriptions,
software discs, computer-based training, payroll records,
manuals or regulation updates.
The trick for the IT Manager is to address all these
issues within a tight budget.
In response, PrimeArray today announced the NetServ
line of direct network attached servers that provides
two essential services for any IT organization, hosting
CDs or DVDs and providing additional network storage
space for backups, archives, or other data storage needs.
Starting at $3,995, the NetServ delivers excellent value
for a sophisticated network storage system.
The PrimeArray NetServ line of direct network attached
storage products can address all these issues in an
affordable and scalable solution. These systems can
store data files, CD/DVD image files and can automate
the migration of data to DVD archives. They have been
designed with a broad array of back-up and recovery
options including enterprise, removable disk, DVD, tape,
or offsite mirroring.
The NetServ system is a complete solution, ready to
install on your network. Direct network attachment means
it is easy to get on the network and doesn’t place
a burden on other servers. It also means any resource
can access it.
The plummeting cost of hard disk storage means that
in many situations, disk storage for backups and archives
has become competitive with tape in terms of cost. Moreover,
hard disk storage far surpasses tape when it comes to
speed, reliability, capacity and recovery. The NetServ
supports NDMP and products like Veritas Backup Exec,
so it will fit into Enterprise-wide backup schemes.
It also comes with its own sophisticated data replication
utility, called SmartSync, which can backup, mirror
or distribute data to other volumes or to remote PrimeArray
systems for hands-free and network-friendly backup and
recovery. SmartSync uses differential block-level transfer
to transmit only data that has changed, yet builds a
complete backup on the remote system.
CD/DVD Servers have virtually replaced data jukeboxes
and towers for sharing CD and DVD-based content. Using
software and hard disk caching of an exact ISO image
of the disc, these servers allow multiple users to simultaneously
access any data with lightning speed. The systems are
easy to setup, easy to manage, easy to use and priced
far less than a jukebox and no more lost or damaged
discs. Capacities range from a handful of discs up to
thousands.
Aside from the benefit of having one system to solve
two problems (easier to manage, less space, less costly),
combining a NAS and a CD/DVD Server delivers the ability
to archive data to DVD. You can easily set up a data
migration scheme, using built in tools, to move older
data to read-only online DVD images and burn off a copy
for offsite storage. Dual-layer DVDs can hold over 8
GB of data, yet are inexpensive, and long lasting relative
to other backup options like tape.
The NetServ line offers the ultimate in scalability.
Using hot expansion, a single unit can be expanded up
to 4 terabytes of RAID 5 protected storage. Using a
utility we call SmartExtend, up to eleven systems can
be logically connected to form a single IP storage system.
Add storage when you need it without impacting existing
systems, up to 44 TB of useable space.
Combining a robust NAS system with a latest technology
CD/DVD server puts all your digital assets online, in
one place where people can access them whenever and
wherever they need. The NetServ and ServStation systems
provide easy to use, versatile and affordable storage
that will grow as your needs grow.
